Why it matters
Bad gain structure makes a build noisy, weak, or harsh.
Too little gain means the system cannot reach the target level. Too much gain raises noise and makes the volume control touchy. Clipping can add harsh distortion and push extra heat into drivers.
How it works
Every stage has a maximum clean level. The source, DSP, preamp, amplifier input, amplifier output, and power supply all have limits.
When the signal exceeds a limit, the waveform is flattened or distorted. That is clipping. It can happen before the power amp, inside the amplifier, or because the power supply cannot keep up.
