Why it matters

The choice changes wiring, cost, tuning, repair, and upgrade paths.

Passive speakers are simple to connect to many amplifiers. Active speakers can give tighter system control because the amplifier, filters, and drivers are designed together.

How it works

In a passive speaker, one amplifier channel feeds the speaker terminals. Inside the cabinet, passive components split the signal between drivers.

In an active speaker, the signal is split before power amplification. Each driver or band gets its own amplifier channel. DSP active systems can also add EQ, delay, limiters, and protection.

Common mistakes

Simple example

Amplifier An amplifier takes a small audio signal and delivers a stronger voltage and current signal to a speaker. The speaker load, power supply, gain, and protection limits decide how hard it can work. Crossover A crossover splits audio between drivers. It is not a hard wall; drivers still overlap around the crossover point. Active & DSP crossovers An active or DSP crossover splits and shapes the signal before amplification. Each driver then gets its own amplifier channel and filter settings. Why split the signal One driver can't do deep bass and clean treble at once. A crossover sends lows to the woofer and highs to the tweeter, keeping each driver in its comfort zone.
